Physiotherapy in Finland
A person allowed to practice physiotherapy profession is an educated licensed physiotherapist who is registered in the National Authority for Medicolegal Affairs. The physiotherapist title is protected. The animal physiotherapists in Finland are organized under Finnish Association of Physiotherapists (FAP) into Finnish Animal Physiotherapist Association.
Animal physiotherapy can be studied as post-degree professional specialization studies, at polytechnic school since 2002. Since 2004 the specialization studies have been organized by Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMK) in Pori. Normally the studies are taken on a part time basis during one year, and contents 30 ECTS credits. To be accepted the student has to have a Degree Programme in Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Health Care (210 ECTS credits), have at least two years working experience and have former experience in handling of animals. The education gives the students knowledge about how to apply human physiotherapy skills to animals and includes studies of animal anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, animal behaviour and animal physiotherapy.
