Cat castration

What is castration?

During castration the testicles are removed. Surgery is performed in complete narcosis. Testicles are removed trough two small skin wounds. It is short and uncomplicated operation. After waking up animal is able to leave home the same day. Patient is getting the needed pain medication and the incision wound does not need any special care. Cats are usually recovering from surgery well and quickly.

Why castration is performed?

The positive side of castration is that the male cat is calming down. This is specially important in outside freely moving male cats as they do not fight so easily with other cats and do not run away and therefore the risk of the car accidents or other traumas is considerably reduced. Castration is usually reducing or totally stopping marking and urination inside as well as the urine smell gets milder. We would definitely suggest to castrate the freely outside moving male cats.

What are the dark sides of castration?

Cats usually gain weight after castration. This is caused by the fact hat the energy needs of castrated animal is smaller as of the intact one. Therefore the reason why castrated cat is gaining weight is not castration itself but the fact that cats is less active but continues to get the same amount of calories. In order to prevent obesity it is recommended to reduce the food portion or change the food brand.
